I find myself enjoying the "Invincible" series。 Kirkman's comic is an entertaining romp through the coming of age story of a young superhuman。 Well, technically speaking, he'd be a half-human。 I am speaking, of course, of Invincible。Mark Grayson (Invincible) ramps up the story with the events of volume three。 Without too many spoilers let it suffice to say that Invincible runs into his father on an alien world and their reunion will be a tragic one as the Viltrumites crash the party。 Not only ar I find myself enjoying the "Invincible" series。 Kirkman's comic is an entertaining romp through the coming of age story of a young superhuman。 Well, technically speaking, he'd be a half-human。 I am speaking, of course, of Invincible。Mark Grayson (Invincible) ramps up the story with the events of volume three。 Without too many spoilers let it suffice to say that Invincible runs into his father on an alien world and their reunion will be a tragic one as the Viltrumites crash the party。 Not only are the family revelations quite shocking, but the impact of the Viltrumite Empire will have long term implications in the upcoming volumes。Invincible also wraps up the Dr。 Angstrom story (at least I think so) and introduces the subplot of the Robot and his interesting "resurrection"。Considering the fun-factor and the twists, this volume would have merited 5 stars, but sadly Kirkman had to include some nonsense filler to pad out the volume。 Meh。Still this is a 4 star story。 Invincible is like a fun superhero movie。 Don't look too deep, just sit back and enjoy the story。 There is humor, some character development in terms of relationships and some interesting plot twists that will certainly have me looking for Volume 4。Kirkman's Invincible will never be mistaken for something deep such as an Alan Moore work。 That is not what this series is about。 It's the story of a powerful superhero who happens to also be a very young man dealing with some crazy personal issues and even crazier situations。 In short- it's a lot of fun。 I'm willing to give some credence to what's on the cover "The Best Superhero comic in the Universe"。 Hyperbole, I realize, but still a damn entertaining volume。 。。。more

This to me is when the series begins to excel。 When Science Dog shows up on Mark's front porch he has to deal with heading back into space to find out what a race of aliens needs with him。 Once he gets there he finds a huge surprise。 On top of that we now have a new family member joining Mark's family so this should be fun。 Oh you think that's all? A old villain returns and it really gets brutal as Mark has to deal with this son of a bitch going after his family。 Overall, this is everything I wa This to me is when the series begins to excel。 When Science Dog shows up on Mark's front porch he has to deal with heading back into space to find out what a race of aliens needs with him。 Once he gets there he finds a huge surprise。 On top of that we now have a new family member joining Mark's family so this should be fun。 Oh you think that's all? Getting good。 I like the Viltrumite storyline better than the Amber /Eve one。 I think the show is doing Invincible a little better than the comic at this point but I still want to read more!

Junk gets serious, and a vicious fight ends in death。 I love when superheroes/superpowers meet morals & ethics。 It’s always fun。 Of course, now Mark has two women in love with him to deal with as well。 What’s a guy to do? *eye roll* Also, I feel really bad for the mom。 She’s been long-suffering for a while now。 (view spoiler)[ Her husband wasn’t who she thought he was and he almost killed their son。 He leaves and doesn’t care about her anymore (so he says)。 She feels lonely and turns to drinking Junk gets serious, and a vicious fight ends in death。 I love when superheroes/superpowers meet morals & ethics。 It’s always fun。 Of course, now Mark has two women in love with him to deal with as well。 What’s a guy to do? *eye roll* Also, I feel really bad for the mom。 She’s been long-suffering for a while now。 (view spoiler)[ Her husband wasn’t who she thought he was and he almost killed their son。 He leaves and doesn’t care about her anymore (so he says)。 She feels lonely and turns to drinking。 She decides to get her life back together and pursue a career。 Her son pops up with his step-brother, from the man who left her, and kind of hints for her to take care of him。 She gets attached to said baby and then a villain bent on revenge, beats the snot outta her。 I want to see some happy moments for her。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

My least favorite of the three volumes, but it definitely seems to get a little better toward the end。 The Angstrom Levy fight is most definitely a high point。。。 the writer in me hopes to see more of him, and the reader who likes Mark and his family hopes desperately that he doesn't。 That's a sign of a well-written villain, I think。 My least favorite of the three volumes, but it definitely seems to get a little better toward the end。 The Angstrom Levy fight is most definitely a high point。。。 the writer in me hopes to see more of him, and the reader who likes Mark and his family hopes desperately that he doesn't。 That's a sign of a well-written villain, I think。 。。。more

MIND BLOW That's what this entire book was, of volumes 6-7, a complete mind blow。 And I almost couldn't put it down。 I had to know。There is one positive and one negative (in that I'm sad) comment I'd like to make。 The negative (sad) one: I'm going to miss robot Robot。 Glad to know why he was working with the tube-baby guy, but sad that robot Robot is leaving。The positive comment: I like Oliver; he's a cute little button with a lovable big brother to boot, with a wonderful stepmother。Another posi MIND BLOW That's what this entire book was, of volumes 6-7, a complete mind blow。 And I almost couldn't put it down。 I had to know。There is one positive and one negative (in that I'm sad) comment I'd like to make。 The negative (sad) one: I'm going to miss robot Robot。 Glad to know why he was working with the tube-baby guy, but sad that robot Robot is leaving。The positive comment: I like Oliver; he's a cute little button with a lovable big brother to boot, with a wonderful stepmother。Another positive comment: HOOOORRRAAAYYYY!!!!! Aliens, time travel, dimension-hopping, surprise family reveals, consequences, the third ultimate collection of Invincible has it all。In "A Different World" we see some old faces, and are introduced to a whole new planet of faces, along with SURPRISE REVEAL。 Much of what makes Invincible work is that Kirkman is constantly presenting scenarios that seem like they're complete, but they're all actually building to something bigger。 This sixth volume of the trade paperback (the first six chapters of Aliens, time travel, dimension-hopping, surprise family reveals, consequences, the third ultimate collection of Invincible has it all。In "A Different World" we see some old faces, and are introduced to a whole new planet of faces, along with SURPRISE REVEAL。 Much of what makes Invincible work is that Kirkman is constantly presenting scenarios that seem like they're complete, but they're all actually building to something bigger。 This sixth volume of the trade paperback (the first six chapters of the Ultimate Collection) is a complete story。 You could read it without ever bothering with the first five, and you'd know what was going on, and it ends at a perfectly reasonable point in the narrative that you could survive never bothering to read further。 I love it when a creative team can pull off a complete narrative within a much larger narrative。***"Threes Company" provides a more standard I Hope You Read The Previous Volumes Scenario。 While there are some repercussions from the SURPRISE REVEALs of the previous volume, much of this depends on stories from the Ultimate Collection Volume 2。 There's also a steady increase in a really creepy subplot that doesn't seem at all creepy unless you know what's coming。 Kudos, Kirkman。I recommend this for fans of the best 21st century long-form superhero book, Cousin Oliver Brady enthusiasts, and M Night Shyamalan twist deniers。 。。。more

Still an interesting world with an interesting set of characters。 But the choices of what to focus on feels a little off。 The relationships feel a bit off。 And there are near misses like with Robot and Monster Girl。 And with Atom Eve and Invincible。 It's sort of like there is only half trying。 Where the alien world of the short lived blue bug creatures actually kind of works。 The "that's so gay" is jarring every time。 Again it is hard not to compare this to Astro City and find it somewhat wantin Still an interesting world with an interesting set of characters。 But the choices of what to focus on feels a little off。 The relationships feel a bit off。 And there are near misses like with Robot and Monster Girl。 And with Atom Eve and Invincible。 It's sort of like there is only half trying。 Where the alien world of the short lived blue bug creatures actually kind of works。 The "that's so gay" is jarring every time。 Again it is hard not to compare this to Astro City and find it somewhat wanting。 3。5 of 5。 。。。more

This was a great bunch of issues in the Invincible story, but I could have done without the lame (to me) crossover stuff at the end。 I don't know who the hell those characters were (I'm assuming they are from other Image titles), but the stories included in this in no way encouraged me to find out。 Just。。。goofy as fuck。Other than that, I have no complaints! There are some huge developments in the story during this arc, and I'm going to try not to spoil actual plot stuff, but if you don't want to This was a great bunch of issues in the Invincible story, but I could have done without the lame (to me) crossover stuff at the end。 I don't know who the hell those characters were (I'm assuming they are from other Image titles), but the stories included in this in no way encouraged me to find out。 Just。。。goofy as fuck。Other than that, I have no complaints! There are some huge developments in the story during this arc, and I'm going to try not to spoil actual plot stuff, but if you don't want to know anything? Now's the time to turn away, folks。Ok。So, ohmygod Omni-man finally shows up again, and he and Invincible get to (sort of) talk about what happened。 <--for a few minutes, anyway。 Turns out Daddy's been busy, and it takes everything to a whole 'nother level in both the long term and short term!*rubs hands together*This did not go down the way I thought it would, by the way。。。So, between his newest family member, the Viltrumites, college, new teammates, a crazy dimension-hopping villain, a mad scientist, and trying to find time for his girlfriend, Mark's life is starting to spin a little out of control。 Honestly, to me, this title is just getting better and better。 I'm halfway though the 4th Ultimate collection, and I'm still not seeing a lag in character development, storyline, or pacing。I'm not sure what else to say other than this shit rocks! 。。。more

Volume 3 of Invincible is the point where it transformed from a good superhero comic to a great mind blowing superhero comic。 Mark's father returns in a most unexpected manner。 Mark learns that he now has a half brother, Oliver, who has some unusual characteristics。 There is a battle with 2 other Viltrumites that shows Mark how vulnerable he can be, fighting his own people。 These battles may seem gross to anyone who hasn't read comics, but if you were weaned on Superman, you will be saying, I ca Volume 3 of Invincible is the point where it transformed from a good superhero comic to a great mind blowing superhero comic。 Mark's father returns in a most unexpected manner。 Mark learns that he now has a half brother, Oliver, who has some unusual characteristics。 There is a battle with 2 other Viltrumites that shows Mark how vulnerable he can be, fighting his own people。 These battles may seem gross to anyone who hasn't read comics, but if you were weaned on Superman, you will be saying, I can't believe he did that。In addition, Angstrom Levy makes his first serious attack on Mark。 Robot transforms his physical appearance in order to make an impression on Monster Girl。 。。。more

I only recently discovered Robert Kirkman's Invincible series, having initially written it off as yet another tired Image attempt at clinging to some remaining market share。 Man, am I kicking myself for not picking this book up years ago! This is probably the very finest teenage superhero saga since Marvel introduced Spider-Man back in the 60's。 I know that's a bold (perhaps blasphemous) statement, but this book practically oozes that classic Lee/Ditko energy, along with elements of Superman, the Teen Titans, and the Savage Dragon。 As much as I love the edgier stuff by Milllar, Bendis et al, it's good to see an author who takes such unbridled joy in an old school superhero tale。Volume 3 in the Invincible hardcover series contains two massively important events, namely the return of way creepy villain Angstrom Levy and Mark's first encounter with his estranged father since their epic battle in volume 1。 If that's not enough, Atom Eve makes a return appearance, Mark discovers some of his father's secrets, and we finally find out just what the heck Robot has been up to。 This is probably the best installment in the Invincible series。 It's wall-to-wall action, but it still manages to work in plenty of character development for Mark and his nothing short of stellar supporting cast (seriously, have you seen a more dynamic and diverse assortment of secondary characters since Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon?)。So why doesn't this book merit a full 5-star rating? One word: quality。 The paper stock used in this collection is way thinner than what was used on previous volumes。 It's darn near transparent, and takes away from the overall enjoyment of the story。 Maybe that's just Image's attempt to save money, but given the book's cover price I think a better quality of paper was in order。That aside, this is a fantastic hardcover collection of one of the absolute best comics on the market today。 With luck, we'll be reading these hardcover collections of Invincible (and seeing him on lunch boxes and Happy Meal toys) for decades to come。 。。。more
